Works in Line 4 of Rio Subway continue in high speed

Excavation of Jardim Oceânico Station, in the quarter of Barra is finished. This is the third station of the line—that will connect Barra da Tijuca to Ipanema—that reaches this stage

In the future station Jardim Oceânico of Line 4 of Rio Subway (Barra da Tijuca – Ipanema), excavation works of the station body were concluded and passenger platforms and technical rooms are being built. The station is located near the “diving”, a section in slope that will connect the station with the stay bridge and will work as arrival and exit path for the trains. This is the third of the six stations foreseen for Line 4 that concludes the excavation works (São Conrado and Nossa Senhora da Paz stations are also with excavation concluded).

In the Barra da Tijuca, activities of reinforcement installation and concrete pouring in the bottom slab, and of construction of a 350 m-long extension that will allow a future expansion towards the Recreio quarter are still being carried out.

To build the Jardim Oceânico station—on the borders of the Tijuca Lagoon—it was necessary to drawdown underground waters that are just two meters below the surface. To do so, approximately 400 pumps are working day and night, allowing the work in that place. To ensure the waterproofing of the station and of passenger accesses, all the concrete structure was covered by a special blanket, a safe and modern technology.

After the end of the works, these pumps will be shut off and the underground water will arise with no impact in the station.

In the first half of 2016—when the operation of the line will start—the time to travel from Barra da Tijuca to Ipanema will be 13 minutes. To go to Botafogo, the passenger will take 23 minutes and 34 minutes to go to downtown. The trip to Uruguai station will take 50 minutes. Passengers coming from Pavuna—in the extreme of the Northern Zone of the city—and going to Barra will take 1h20, with transfer in the General Osório station, in Ipanema. Currently, this path—carried out by subway and integration bus—takes 2h20.

Line 4 of Rio de Janeiro Subway (Barra da Tijuca—Ipanema) is a project carried out by the State Government of Rio de Janeiro that will transport more than 300 thousand persons per day and will remove approximately 2000 vehicles by peak hour of traffic. With this new line, the passenger may use the entire subway system with the same ticket.

This line will have six stations (Jardim Oceânico, São Conrado, Gávea, Antero de Quental, Jardim de Alah and Nossa Senhora da Paz) and will be approximately 16 km long.

“Green” stations

Stations of Line 4 will have natural lighting, in an architectural concept that gives value to the city’s daylight. Large glass walls and roof skylights create a more pleasant and harmonic environment. In the Jardim Oceânico station, the consortium responsible by the works (Consórcio Construtor Rio Barra - CCRB) selected a more sustainable design. The external area will be integrated to the new landscaping Project of Armando Lombardi Avenue,—in addition to the glass windows in the sides of the mezzanine that allow the air flow—a “green roof” to cover the station.

A flowered lawn that will cover the whole extension of the station will be built in the central bed of the traffic lanes. In the elevated section, an ecologic roof will be built. This roof has the advantage of ensuring thermal insulation in the underground levels and also gives an aesthetic and environmental differential. Little and medium openings in this lawn complement the landscaping, working as points to get lighting for the station interior.

The vegetal coverage of the ecologic roof will allow a heat and moisture exchange that is more pleasant than that of the conventional roofs. The feeling of confinement which is natural in underground areas is quite reduced in this station. Its elevated roof allows natural light to enter the station and establishes integration with the external environment.

In the sides of the green roof are glass facades that may be seen from the Armando Lombardi Avenue at 5.7 meter of the walkway level. People who pass through the future “diving” will also see the ecologic roof of the station and the elements installed on the roof, designed to complete the natural lighting collection.

The arch of the central span will be 68 m long and 10.7 m wide, corresponding to the narrowest part of the station, built in concrete. But the glass-closed lighting points dug in the lawn will also allow the income of light. The arch will be 12 m high in the passenger circulation area, and will be bordered by windows and side openings.

In the São Conrado station, passenger accesses of Estrada da Gávea (in front of Extra Supermarket) and near the Rocinha Slum will receive roof skylights with diameter of 16 meters, located over the areas of turnstiles and box offices. Through the glass roof, sunlight will enlighten the space at a height of 16 m and will give more life to the underground station and its accesses.
