On the route of Tamoios indians

Road in São Paulo receives a high investment (R$ 7.5 billion) to open a new access through the Serra do Mar (Sea Mountains) to reach the Port of São Sebastião, in the northern seashore

Tamoios Road (SP-099) was built in the fifties by theDepartamento de Estradas de Rodagem(DER- SP) to connect the inland region ofSão José dos Campos toCaraguatatuba, in the Northern Seashore and half-way on the road that goes toRio de Janeiro. It became one of the most strategic roads of the state, since one of the main industrial parks of the state (and of the country) is located in one of its ends and in the other it is a connection to the route to the Ports of Santos and Rio de Janeiro through Via Dutra (BR-116), Rodovia Carvalho Pinto (SP-70), Pitas Road (SP-88) and Rio-Santos Road (SP-55/BR-101).

More than fifty years later, the road receives a very high public (around R$ 3 billion) and private investment (around R$ 4 billion) in a total of R$ 7 billion to enlarge its traffic capacity and its length, reducing the path to the Port of São Sebastião.  In the plateau section, where the works are already concluded, R$ 1.1 billion were spent (resources from the State Government). The mountain section starts to receive the first installments of a total of R$ 4.5 billion to be invested by the concessionaire that won the auction of thePrograma de ParceriaPrivada (PPP). And in the contour section, R$ 3 billion will be invested by the state government.

This is the main project of road infrastructure being carried out in the country. It will allow a considerable increase of products with aggregate value shipped through the Port of SãoSebastião. More than that, it will represent the logistic model of port-road integration, considered one of the highest current deficiencies of the country to enlarge its participation in foreign trade.

The road also cuts the Serra do Mar and crosses the cities ofJambeiro, JacareíandParaibuna along its 82 km.According to the Secretary of Logistic and Transport of the State of São Paulo, Alberto José MacedoFilho, the project is fundamental for the planof economic expansion of the state.

The New Tamoios Contour was thought as an alternative to the SP-055 for access toCaraguatatubaand São Sebastião. It includes a set of modernization and expansion works. The plateau section is already doubled and was liberated to traffic in January, 2014 (investment of R$ 1.1 billion). The Mountain Section will be carried out through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). One of the main differentials of the project is exactly the construction of 33.9 km of a new road with five double tunnels with 6.7 km in each direction, and 44 bridges and viaducts, in a total length of 8 km.

Works in the plateau section started in 2014, performed byDersa with resources from the State Government. They are composed by 50 km, divided in two sections: the first one goes from km 11.5 to km 35.8, and the other, from the km 35.8 to the km 60.5, crossing the municipalities of São José dos Campos,Jacareí, JambeiroandParaibuna. After works of plateau section were concluded (cost of R$ 1.1 billion), the State Government authorized the start of works to double the Mountain Section. Investments just in this section were estimated in R$ 2.96 billion.
